Untamed vol.2: Young Artists Group Exhibition

19 December 2020 - 30 January 2021

COHJU contemporary art is pleased to present an annual group show, untamed vol.2, from December 19th, 2020 to January 30th, 2021. Untamed has been held since last year to spotlight young emerging artists based in Japan. The second edition focuses on three painters; Daichi Sato, Fumika Tsuchitori and Tomohiro Takahashi.

Daichi Sato was born in 1985 and currently based in Okinawa, Japan. Sato graduated from Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in 2009. Sato paints nostalgic and surrealistic scenes which are inspired by images randomly found on the internet, casual photographs and stories heard from his acquaintances. By adding some imaginary objects to the original surroundings, the images he creates engender a timeless and universal atmosphere thus familiar to everyone, and waver between reality and fantasy.

Fumika Tsuchitori was born in 1995 and currently based in Kyoto, Japan. In 2020, Tsuchitori received an M.A. in Contemporary Art from Kyoto University of Art and Design. Tsuchitori has devoted herself to two series called I and You, which capture intimate moments between two people, and a scene that extracts elements such as colors and shapes from landscapes. The highly abstracted objects are decorated with some inimitable patterns and a dash of lacquer spray. The boundary between each figure is unclear as the relationship itself remains uncertain no matter how we try to grasp.

Tomohiro Takahashi was born in 1996 and is currently enrolled in a master degree at Kyoto University of the Arts. Inspired by a stuffed animal he has treasured for many years, Takahashi is obsessed with toys that are shaped as living creatures but can not speak, therefore they have huge capacity to accept all without any judgements. The contrast between the bare canvas and the cut-and-paste style background functions as a stage set to cause a dissimilation effect, in order to spotlight the ideal world he creates in the painting.

The show features complexity of relationships between oneself and others, and richness of our imagination, which can not be analyzed with numbers or data even under this highly-networked information society. Due to the current situation we are all facing, we are happy to deliver the images and the movies to feel the exhibition online.
