Hal Matsuda was born in Iwate Prefecture in 1998. He graduated from the University of Tsukuba in 2021 with a BFA in printmaking, and Kyoto University of the Arts in 2023 with an MFA in Fine Art, and is currently based in Tokyo.

 

Matsuda has devoted himself to projects to dissolve the differences and dichotomies between virtual reality and the real world in various media, including prints, 3D printed sculptures, video, and installations.

 

Major solo exhibitions include "The Limited Overworld" (COHJU, Kyoto, 2023) and "VIRTUAL ABSTRACTION" (BUNKA UNION DOGO, Tokyo, 2021). Major group exhibitions include "Diffuse Distance / Convert's Manner / Variable Sun" (MITSUKOSHI CONTEMPORARY GALLERY, Tokyo, 2022),"Bodily Retranslation" (Bar & Gallery COCOTO, Kyoto, 2021). In 2021, he received the WATOWA ART AWARD 2021 Special Prize (Tomoko Ashikawa Prize, Shigeru Aoi Prize, Maho Kubota Prize, and Takahiro Komatsu Prize), as well as the Grand Prix at Chotei GALLERY Exhibition 2021.
