COHJU contemporary art is pleased to hold an exhibition "Eternal Memories" by two Japanese artists based in Tokyo, Fuyuki Kanai and Tomoki Kodama.
Fuyuki Kanai is an illustrator and comic writer who tries to reach out and present all kinds of queerness by interweaving personal experiences with political issues. He published an anthology "LONG WAY HOME" in 2018, which is a compilation of three ZINEs produced from 2015 to 2017, "HOME", "WAY", and "LONG". In recent years, he has contributed works to novels and magazines, and has been attracting attention for his multi-faceted activities.
The people drawn with pale pastel colors and soft lines have somehow melancholy, anxious and distrustful eyes. By highlighting the existence of people who have spilled from the system of our society through the works, Kanai tries to warn us of the social standard that eliminates the weak and minorities.
Tomoki Kodama moved to Tokyo in 2016, after dropping out of high school to become a painter, and started activities as a third-year student at a private school, Parplume, which is run by artist Yoichi Umezu. Since 2017, he has held numerous exhibitions mainly in Tokyo, while also collaborating with fashion brands.
It is no exaggeration to say that the process of how we form our own identity is archived by copying and re-editing the identities of others. Kodama's work consists of decomposed and combined images and symbols that are consumed daily through SNS and various media, and by blending words and spirituality into it with a variety of colors, it reveals the inner struggle of human beings who seeks “originality”.
In this exhibition, entitled "Eternal Memories," the two artists will present works in different approaches with the theme of relationships and memories with close people. We hope that this will be an opportunity to reaffirm our connections with people close to us, as the physical distance from others is increasing due to the unprecedented pandemic.
